In 1993, Au Bon Pain Company acquired Panera Bread (formerly Saint Louis Bread Company). In 1999, Ron Shaich (Au Bon Pain’s co-owner and Panera’s owner) sold Au Bon Pain to focus exclusively on all of Panera Bread’s successful efforts. Eighteen years later, Panera and Au Bon Pain are reunited once again under the JAB Holding Company umbrella. With this wonderful merger reuniting two long lost sandwich pals, a lot of immediate changes are being implemented, such as Ron Shaich stepping down as CEO.
